At Sheen Falls Lodge Wine Cellar · Kenmare, Co. Kerry
A candlelit evening in one of the largest private wine cellars in Ireland is a long way from a standard tasting night. The wine cellar at Sheen Falls Lodge sits beneath this 5-star property just outside Kenmare, reached by a set of secret stairs that open into a vaulted stone chamber fitted with brick walls, long wooden tables, barrel furniture and over 10,000 bottles sourced from 23 countries. The sommelier-led tasting here is the kind of experience that suits a special occasion, a birthday trip along the Ring of Kerry, or simply anyone with a genuine interest in wine who wants more than a glass at the bar.
The standard wine tasting takes you through six carefully chosen bottles, guided by an expert sommelier who covers aromas, flavour notes, terroir and the story behind each winemaker. Food pairing suggestions come as part of the session - useful context that travels home with you. If you want to go deeper, the lodge also offers a premium tasting focused on rare and sought-after vintages, with more detailed commentary on the fine wine side of things. The cellar programme extends to whiskey and gin as well: an Irish whiskey discovery tasting walks through production methods and flavour profiles, while two gin options (classic and premium) focus on botanicals and distinct styles. Private dinners for up to 12 can also be arranged in the cellar itself, with food served from the upstairs Falls Restaurant menu - though those need at least a month’s lead time.
All tastings are private and require a minimum of one week’s notice to book. Contact the hotel directly to confirm which format suits your group and to secure a date.
Kenmare sits at the head of the Kenmare River estuary where the N71 from Killarney meets the N70 from the Ring of Kerry - roughly 35 km south of Killarney town, about a 35-minute drive. Bus Eireann runs services between Killarney and Kenmare, though frequency is limited outside summer. Sheen Falls Lodge is signposted on the approach to Kenmare from the Killarney direction and has ample on-site parking. If you are travelling from Cork, the N22 to Killarney and then the N71 south is the main route - allow around 1 hour 45 minutes from Cork city.
Kenmare itself rewards an extra hour or two - the town has a good spread of independent food and craft shops, and the Blue Flag beach at Reenagross Park is a short walk from the centre. There is more to see in Kenmare and across Co. Kerry.
