Dingle Peninsula Triathlon

At Dingle Pier · Dingle Pier, Dingle, Co. Kerry

Dingle Peninsula Triathlon combining swim, cycle, run

The Dingle Peninsula Triathlon is one of the more scenic and physically demanding events on the Irish triathlon calendar. Organised by Dingle Triathlon Club, it draws competitors from across Ireland and beyond who want to race hard through some of the finest coastal landscape in the country. For both PB-chasers and those who simply want to experience the peninsula in a way a car tour never allows, this is an event that stays with you long after the finish line.

What to expect

The event runs two distances from Dingle Pier. The sprint distance covers a 750m open water swim in Dingle Bay, a 20km cycle around the roads of the Dingle Peninsula, and a 5km run through Dingle town. The standard (Olympic) distance doubles up: 1.5km swim, 40km cycle, and a 10km run. The standard-distance cycle loop takes competitors out along the Slea Head route - one of the most dramatic stretches of road in Ireland, with the Blasket Islands sitting off the headland and the Atlantic rolling in below. Water temperature in Dingle Bay runs around 14 to 15 degrees Celsius in August, so a wetsuit is standard for almost everyone. Transition is set up at the pier, and the race uses chip timing with full race support on the course.

Getting there

Dingle is about 70km west of Tralee and roughly 150km from Cork. From Dublin, the most practical route is the M7 to Limerick, then south and west through Tralee and over the Connor Pass - a spectacular mountain road in itself, though narrow, so allow extra time. Bus Eireann runs services to Dingle from Tralee, with Tralee linked to the national rail network. Parking in Dingle town can fill quickly on race morning, so arriving early is advisable. The pier itself is in the centre of town, within walking distance of most accommodation.

While you’re in Dingle

Dingle is a working harbour town with a strong music scene and a concentration of good restaurants and pubs for a place its size. The recovery meal and the pint after a race here tend to be rather good. There is more to see in Dingle and across Co. Kerry.
