At Dingle Town · Dingle Pier to Head, Dingle, Co. Kerry
The Dingle Pier to Head Road Race is one of those events where the course does half the work for you. Organised by Dingle Athletic Club, it takes runners out from the working pier at the heart of Dingle town along the coastal road towards Dingle Head, the rugged promontory that juts into the Atlantic at the western end of the peninsula. The race is open to competitive runners and fun runners alike, making it a sound choice whether you are chasing a personal best or simply want an excuse to run one of the most striking stretches of coastline in Kerry with other people around you.
The start is at Dingle Pier, the busy fishing quay that sits at the centre of town. From there the route follows the coastal road westward, with views opening up over Dingle Bay as you climb and descend along the shore. Running towards Dingle Head, you get the full force of the peninsula landscape - green hills rolling down to the water, Atlantic light shifting over the bay, and the kind of quiet that you only find at the western edge of Europe. Chip timing is used throughout, and competitive categories cover a range of ages and abilities. Results and certificates are issued after the race. Entry is from €12. The 9:30am start means you will be out on the road before the peninsula fills with visitors, which is worth factoring in if you are making a day of it.
Dingle is roughly 70km west of Tralee, reached by the N86 road through the mountains or via Camp and Annascaul. The drive from Tralee takes around an hour; from Cork it is closer to two and a half hours via Killarney. Bus Éireann runs services from Tralee to Dingle, though frequency is limited, so a car gives you more flexibility on race day. Parking in Dingle is available in the town centre car parks; arrive early on race morning as spaces fill quickly in August.
Dingle town itself rewards a few hours of wandering - fishing boats in the harbour, good seafood on the main street, and the peninsula roads spreading out in every direction for walking or driving. The race gives you a reason to see that western coastline on foot before the day is done. There is more to see in Dingle and across Co. Kerry.
