Dingle Summer Sea Swim

At Dingle Pier · Dingle Pier, Dingle, Co. Kerry

Dingle summer open water sea swim in Dingle Bay

The Dingle Summer Sea Swim is a July fixture that draws swimmers of all abilities to one of the most scenic stretches of water on the west coast of Ireland. Organised by Dingle Sea Swimmers, it sets competitors and leisure swimmers alike out into Dingle Bay from the town pier, with the Blasket Islands sitting on the horizon and the green slopes of the Dingle Peninsula rising behind. If you have ever wanted a reason to get into the Atlantic beyond a quick dip, this is it.

What to expect

The event offers multiple distances - typically 400m, 1km and 2km - so there is a route whether you are a first-timer or a seasoned open-water swimmer. All distances start from Dingle Pier and route through the bay, with safety kayaks and support boats escorting every wave of swimmers. Registration takes place on the morning of the event, so there is no need to be on the road before dawn. Wetsuits are permitted (and popular - the water in Dingle Bay sits around 14 to 16 degrees Celsius in late July), and race bibs are provided. Entry is from €18, making it one of the more accessible sea-swim events on the Kerry calendar.

Dingle Sea Swimmers run the event with a community feel - locals line the pier, and the atmosphere is more club morning than elite race. That said, the bay demands respect: plan to wear a wetsuit unless you are very comfortable in cool water, and don’t underestimate the 2km distance even in calm conditions.

Getting there

Dingle is about 50km west of Tralee on the N86, a straightforward drive of around 45 minutes from Tralee and roughly two hours from Cork or Limerick. From Dublin, allow three and a half hours. The town has no train station; Bus Eireann runs services from Tralee (Route 275), but frequency is limited, so most people drive. Parking in Dingle town centre fills quickly on summer Sundays - arrive early or use the car parks on the eastern approach to the town and walk the short distance to the pier.

While you’re in Dingle

The swim ends in good time to spend the afternoon in the town. Dingle has a strong tradition of seafood - the main street turns up everything from fish and chips to sit-down restaurants with locally caught crab and lobster - and the pubs are good for an afternoon session. There is more to see in Dingle and across Co. Kerry.
