Killorglin Community Sports Day

At Killorglin Sports Complex · Killorglin Sports Complex, Killorglin, Co. Kerry

Killorglin community sports day with track and field events

A free outdoor sports day run by and for the people of Killorglin, this annual September event draws families, school-age children, and older participants out to the Sports Complex for a full morning of track and field, fun races, and team games. There is no competitive pressure here - the point is community participation, and the range of activities means everyone from a six-year-old running their first race to a grandparent cheering from the sideline will find something to enjoy. A BBQ and refreshments on site turn the event into a proper community gathering rather than just a morning programme.

What to expect

The day is organised by Killorglin Community Sports and kicks off at 10:00am at the Killorglin Sports Complex. Expect the standard community sports day format: running races divided by age group, field events, relay races, and novelty fun races that tend to attract the biggest crowds. The emphasis is firmly on participation over times and distances. All ages are catered for, from young children through to adults, so a family with a range of ages can stay for the duration and keep everyone engaged. BBQ and refreshments are available on site, so there is no need to bring a packed lunch if you are planning to make a morning of it.

The Killorglin Sports Complex is a community-run, non-profit facility that serves as a hub for the town’s sporting life year-round, home to clubs covering hockey, basketball, badminton, bowls, and more. The community sports day sits naturally within that tradition.

Getting there

Killorglin sits at the junction of the N70 and N72, roughly 22 km west of Killarney and 26 km south of Tralee, making it a straightforward drive from either direction. The Sports Complex is centrally located in the town, with parking available on-site. Bus Éireann routes 279 (from Tralee, around 35 minutes) and 279A (from Killarney, around 30 minutes) run multiple times daily into Killorglin town centre. The nearest train stations are in Killarney and Tralee, both on the Dublin Heuston line - from there a short bus or taxi ride completes the journey.

While you’re in Killorglin

Killorglin is best known across Ireland for Puck Fair, one of the country’s oldest festivals, held each August, but the town has a pleasant character year-round with good cafes and the River Laune running through it. It also sits at the start of the Ring of Kerry route if you want to extend the trip into a longer day out. There is more to see in Killorglin and across Co. Kerry.
