At North Mayo Heritage Centre · Enniscoe, Castlehill, Crossmolina, Co. Mayo
A free four-hour workshop where children make their own felted sheep from scratch - using nothing but wool, a barbed needle, and their hands. Needle felting is one of those crafts that sounds tricky but clicks quickly for kids: you poke coloured wool repeatedly into a base until the fibres lock together and take shape. The result is a small, solid, tactile thing they made themselves and take home. Held at the North Mayo Heritage Centre on the Enniscoe Estate, it runs on a Tuesday morning in early July and costs nothing to attend.
The workshop runs from 11:00am to 3:00pm - a proper half-day session, not a quick taster. All materials are provided, so there is nothing to prepare or bring. The North Mayo Heritage Centre sits within the historic Enniscoe Estate on the shores of Lough Conn, surrounded by mature woodland and organic gardens. The centre runs a summer programme of hands-on craft sessions for children - this needle-felting day sits alongside willow weaving and natural dyeing workshops across July. The Bright Sky Café on site does coffee and freshly baked food made with produce from the walled garden if parents want somewhere to wait. Booking is through the FareHarbor system on the centre’s website; places are limited so reserve early.
Crossmolina is on the N59, about 9 km west of Ballina. From Ballina the drive takes roughly ten minutes. From Westport, follow the N5 north to Castlebar, then the N59 north-west through Pontoon - allow about 45 minutes. Bus Éireann runs four services a day between Ballina Bus Station and Crossmolina, with TFI Local Link Mayo adding further connections. From town, the Heritage Centre is signposted south along the Castlehill Road towards Enniscoe. Parking is on the estate grounds.
The town sits at the northern end of Lough Conn, and the Enniscoe Estate is worth a longer look even outside the workshop - the woodland loop walks take in views of the lough and Nephin Mountain. There is more to see in Crossmolina and across Co. Mayo.
