The Castlegannon Show is one of south Kilkenny’s long-standing summer fixtures - a proper agricultural show held on open farmland at Knockmoylan, just outside Mullinavat. It draws farming families, show jumping enthusiasts, pet owners and anyone who enjoys a day out that feels rooted in the place rather than imported from elsewhere. If you have children in tow, or a dog you fancy putting in front of a judge, this is a good day for it.
The show runs across several disciplines. Show jumping is a centrepiece, with classes that typically cater to a range of abilities and horse types. There are also pet classes covering dogs and cats, which tend to attract a good turnout of younger participants. Sporting contests and Macra na Feirme activities bring a community flavour, and live music keeps the atmosphere going through the afternoon.
The showground at Knockmoylan is a working agricultural setting, which means sensible footwear is worth thinking about regardless of the weather. Trade stands and rural exhibits usually fill the gaps between rings, with local suppliers, food stalls and general country-show fare. The show is affiliated with the Irish Shows Association and received €6,700 in government funding for 2026, which reflects its standing as a genuine community event rather than a one-off.
Mullinavat sits on the R700, roughly 20 km south of Kilkenny city and about 14 km north of New Ross. By car from Kilkenny city, take the N10 south and pick up the R700 through Knocktopher - the drive takes around 20 to 25 minutes. From Waterford city, head north on the N25 and turn onto the R700 at New Ross direction; allow about 30 minutes. Bus Eireann serves the Kilkenny - New Ross corridor but services on Sundays are limited, so checking timetables in advance is sensible. Parking on showday is typically in fields adjacent to the ground - follow signage on approach.
