What to Expect

Laura Veirs is an American singer songwriter from the Pacific Northwest with a long back catalogue of solo albums built on detailed, often nature drawn imagery and dreamy, carefully arranged production, much of it produced over the years by her former husband Tucker Martine. She is probably best known outside her solo work for case/lang/veirs, the 2016 collaborative album and tour she made with Neko Case and k.d. lang, a project that introduced her songwriting to a considerably wider audience than her solo records had reached on their own. Expect a set built on quiet detail rather than big choruses, fingerpicked guitar, a voice that sits somewhere between folk and indie pop, and lyrics that reward close listening more than a first pass. It is the kind of show that suits an attentive room, and Monroe’s Live upstairs, away from the noise of the tavern downstairs, gives a set like this the quiet it needs.

Getting There

Galway city is well connected from around the country, with Irish Rail running direct services from Dublin Heuston in around two hours fifteen minutes and Bus Eireann and Citylink both running frequent coaches from Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Monroe’s is on Dominick Street Upper in Galway’s West End, across the bridge from the Claddagh and about a 10 to 15 minute walk from Eyre Square and the train and bus station, with a good choice of pubs and casual food nearby for before the show.
