Every summer, thousands of children across Ireland swap the school run for a week of Gaelic games, and in County Leitrim the GAA Cúl Camps are one of the most reliable fixtures on the family calendar. Run by the GAA and sponsored by Kellogg’s, these week-long camps give boys and girls aged 5 upwards a proper grounding in Gaelic football, hurling, camogie, and handball - coached by local volunteers and qualified coaches who know the games from the ground up. If your child has never picked up a hurley, that is exactly the point. The camps are built for beginners as much as for kids already playing with a club.
Each camp runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 2pm, at GAA club grounds across County Leitrim. The week is structured so that coaches build on different skills each day - catching, striking, kicking, ground play - before a small-sided blitz at the end of the week lets the children put it all into practice in a match setting. The approach is games-based and player-centred, with the emphasis firmly on fun and participation rather than talent selection.
Alongside the sport, a nutrition programme called Powering Play runs through the week, helping children understand how food fuels activity - practical and low-key rather than preachy. Inclusive camps (Cúl Eile) are available for children with additional needs, run with adapted coaching and extra support. Each child takes home a Cúl Camps gear bag at the end of the week, which tends to make the whole thing feel like a proper event rather than just childminding.
Venues spread across the county - clubs in Carrick-on-Shannon, Mohill, and other Leitrim towns typically host weeks throughout July and August. Check the Kellogg’s Cúl Camps booking site to see the full list of Leitrim venues and available dates once registration opens.

The Shannon is the natural draw in Carrick-on-Shannon - hiring a day cruiser or simply walking the marina boardwalk is a popular way to spend an afternoon while the children are at camp. There is more to see in Leitrim and across Co. Leitrim.
