Wanderlore Exhibition - Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre

At Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre · 24 Main Street, Limavady, BT49 0FJ, Co. Derry

Artwork inspired by local myths and legends on display at the Wanderlore exhibition in Limavady

What to Expect

Wanderlore is an exhibition built around the myths, legends and folklore of the Roe Valley, developed by the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre in partnership with seven local primary and special schools. Pupils researched heroic deeds, mystical creatures and ancient stories tied to Limavady’s landscape and history, then worked with artists and teachers to turn that research into original artwork now on display in the gallery, ranging from paintings and drawings to models and mixed-media pieces. Rather than a static local-history display of artefacts behind glass, it is a way into the area’s folk heritage through the eyes of the children who grew up surrounded by it, covering everything from half-remembered legends passed down at home to the actual hills, rivers and landmarks around Limavady that inspired them. The exhibition sits within the centre’s wider heritage exhibitions programme, which regularly turns Roe Valley history and folklore into family-friendly gallery shows, and makes a good short stop for visitors travelling between Derry and the Causeway Coast. Entry is free and the gallery can be visited alongside the centre’s theatre, cinema and box office in the same building, so it is easy to combine a look at the exhibition with catching a film or checking what else is on that week.
