Limerick and Quimper 45th Anniversary Celebration

At Shannon Rowing Club · Sarsfield Bridge, Limerick City, Co. Limerick

Traditional Breton and Irish musicians performing by the River Shannon

Limerick Quimper Twinning marks 45 years of the partnership between Limerick and Quimper in Brittany with an evening of shared music and dance at Shannon Rowing Club, right on the river at Sarsfield Bridge. The celebration runs from 5pm to 8pm and brings together performers from both cities for what the organisers are calling a céilí noz, a community gathering built around music and dancing rather than a formal concert.

What to expect

Traditional Breton music and dance comes from the Mederien Penhars ensemble, paired with traditional Irish music and dance from Planxty O’Rourke, giving the evening two distinct folk traditions on the same bill. Alongside the performances there are beginner-friendly dance workshops for anyone who wants to join in rather than just watch, plus language games exploring Breton and Irish phrases, a nod to the cultural exchange behind the twinning itself. The event is supported by Région Bretagne and is pitched at families, visitors, music enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in Celtic culture, so no prior dancing experience is expected or needed. It is a one-off anniversary event rather than a recurring fixture, timed to mark the 45-year milestone specifically.

Getting there

Shannon Rowing Club sits on the Limerick city side of Sarsfield Bridge, a short walk from O’Connell Street and the city’s main car parks. It is well served by local bus routes and is an easy walk from Colbert Station.

While you’re in Limerick City

Sarsfield Bridge and the riverside walkway are among the nicest stretches of Limerick city to explore before or after the event, with King John’s Castle and the Milk Market both a short walk away. There is more to see in Limerick City and across Co. Limerick.
