Two of Longford’s most storied GAA clubs meet on a summer Wednesday evening at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park for this U16 Hurling Cup Round 1 clash. Clonguish Gaels, based in Newtownforbes to the west of the county, are senior hurling champions five times and dominated Longford football in the 1960s. Longford Slashers, the town club, have twelve county hurling titles and a ladies’ side that won All-Ireland in 2022 - the first Longford club in any code to do so. When these two meet, even at underage level, genuine county rivalry comes with it. It suits anyone who wants live GAA without the cost of a ticket.
This is Round 1 of the U16 Hurling Cup - a competitive underage cup fixture rather than a challenge game, so both clubs will have young players putting in a serious effort.
