Longford Slashers vs Carrick Hurling Club (St. Marys)

At Glennon Brothers Pearse Park · Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, Longford, Co. Longford

Longford GAA fixture

An evening hurling fixture at the county grounds is one of those small pleasures of an Irish summer - and this U12 Mini Hurling League clash between Longford Slashers and Carrick Hurling Club (St. Marys) is exactly that. It is a league fixture for young players still learning the game, which means the atmosphere is local, loud, and entirely relaxed. Parents, siblings, and neighbours fill the sidelines; anyone with even a passing interest in GAA is welcome to turn up.

What to expect

This is Round 6 of the U12 Mini Hurling League, run under Longford GAA. The two clubs have a history in underage hurling competition - Carrick Hurling Club (St. Marys), based in Carrick-on-Shannon in Leitrim, has competed in Longford underage hurling since 2021, and Longford Slashers is one of the county’s most established clubs, founded in 1954 through the merger of Longford Wanderers and Whiterock Slashers. The Slashers hurling section started up in 1981 and has won the Longford Senior Hurling Championship 12 times, so there is a genuine hurling tradition in the club the younger players are stepping into.

Underage hurling at this level is fast, physical, and often surprisingly skilful. Expect a full 60-plus minutes of play, a competitive edge between two clubs that know each other from earlier rounds, and a friendly crowd. Admission is free.

Getting there

Glennon Brothers Pearse Park sits in Longford town, the county capital, and is straightforward to reach. From Dublin, it is roughly 130km on the N4/M4 - about 90 minutes by car. Bus Eireann runs regular services from Dublin to Longford town, and the Sligo-Dublin rail line stops at Longford station, a short walk or taxi from the ground. The ground has on-site parking. The main entrance is on the Lisbrack Road side of town.

While you’re in Longford

Longford town has a pleasant main street, a few good local cafes, and the River Camlin running through the centre. St. Mel’s Cathedral - rebuilt and reopened after a fire - is worth a quick look if you arrive early. There is more to see in Longford and across Co. Longford.
