Longford Slashers vs Kenagh G.A.A

At Glennon Brothers Pearse Park · Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, Longford, Co. Longford

Longford GAA fixture

An evening club football match in Longford town, this Junior A Championship fixture brings together two clubs with plenty of local rivalry to settle. Longford Slashers are one of the biggest clubs in the county - a town club founded in 1954 through the merger of Longford Wanderers and Whiterock Slashers, with a long record across football, hurling, ladies football, and camogie. Kenagh St. Dominic’s are no pushovers either; they won the Longford Intermediate Football Championship in 2023, coming from six points down in the final to claim the title for the first time in 40 years. A Friday-night Championship game at Pearse Park draws a loyal crowd, and admission is free.

What to expect

The match kicks off at 20:00 at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, the county ground for Longford GAA. The venue has a current capacity of around 10,000 and has been sponsored by Glennon Brothers, the local Longford timber firm, since 2011. Junior A Championship games here carry genuine stakes - clubs are fighting for the right to progress through the rounds and reach the county final. The atmosphere on a summer Friday evening is relaxed but involved; locals arrive early, the pre-match chat is good, and the crowd grows as throw-in approaches. Bring a jacket for the second half if the evening turns cool - Pearse Park is open and the light drops quickly by late August.

Getting there

Longford town sits on the N4 Dublin to Sligo national primary road, roughly 120km north-west of Dublin and well signposted. By car from Dublin, the drive takes around 90 minutes depending on traffic. Longford is also on the main Dublin Heuston to Sligo rail line, with regular Irish Rail services; the station is a short walk from the town centre and Pearse Park is within easy reach. Bus Eireann coaches also serve Longford on several routes. Parking is available at and around the ground, though for a popular Championship evening it is worth arriving a little before 20:00 to get a good spot.
