Longford Slashers vs Wolfe Tones Óg

At Glennon Brothers Pearse Park · Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, Longford, Co. Longford

Longford GAA fixture

Two of Longford’s hurling clubs meet under lights at the county ground for a U16 Hurling Cup Round 2 tie that carries real weight for the young players involved. Longford Slashers, based in Longford town, are one of the county’s most established hurling outfits; Wolfe Tones Óg are the underage side connected to the Wolfe Tones (Mostrim) club in Edgeworthstown, a club with a strong tradition in the county. A Wednesday evening fixture at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park at 7pm is the kind of game that rewards turning up early - the atmosphere is relaxed, the hurling is quick, and it costs nothing to get in.

What to expect

This is underage county championship hurling - U16 Cup, Round 2 - so you are watching teenagers who have been playing since they could hold a hurl. The standard at Longford underage level is competitive, and cup ties at this stage of the competition tend to produce determined, physical games with plenty of scores. Both clubs have active underage hurling structures and will be fielding young players who may be wearing the county jersey in years to come. Expect a fast game with the sliotar moving quickly from hand to hand. The 7pm start means the light should still be good in early September. Admission is free, so there is no reason not to come and see what the next generation of Longford hurling looks like.

Getting there

Glennon Brothers Pearse Park sits on the Lisbrack Road on the southern edge of Longford town. From the town centre it is a short drive or an easy walk. If you are coming from Dublin, take the M4 or N4 west to Longford - the journey is around 120km and takes roughly 90 minutes. Bus Éireann runs regular services on the Dublin to Ballina route, stopping in Longford town; from the bus stop, the ground is reachable on foot in around 10 to 15 minutes. Parking is available on site and in the streets nearby. The ground holds up to 10,000 so there is no concern about space for a midweek underage fixture.

While you’re in Longford

Longford town has a compact and walkable centre with a handful of good cafés and pubs within easy reach of the ground. The county is quieter than many of its neighbours, which is part of its appeal - Lough Ree is just to the south, and there are decent driving routes through the countryside that reward a bit of extra time. There is more to see in Longford and across Co. Longford.
