Lucan Festival Family Fun Day 2026

At Main Street, Lucan Village · Main Street, Lucan Village, Co. Dublin

A busy village street festival with stalls and crowds

What to Expect

The Lucan Festival’s Family Fun Day takes over Main Street in Lucan Village for the day, with roads closing at 11:00am and reopening at 7:00pm to make way for the day’s programme. A main stage near Toolans Bridge hosts local and international dance and singing performances from 2:00pm, giving the day a proper festival-scale entertainment line-up rather than just a few market stalls. A food fair running alongside offers a spread of international cuisine, adding a broader food-festival feel to the village-fete atmosphere.

One of the more distinctive elements is the Garda Station Open Day, giving families a look at cells, Garda dogs and the mounted unit, a hands-on attraction that tends to be a particular hit with younger children. Later in the afternoon, around 4:30pm, the traditional Duck Race takes place on the Griffeen River, with plastic ducks bought for €2 each or three for €5 racing downstream, a simple but well-loved fixture of the festival that raises funds as part of the day.

The Family Fun Day sits within a wider Lucan Festival week that includes historic walks around the village led by the festival’s chairman and a historic exhibition at St Andrews Parish Centre later in September, so the Family Fun Day is best thought of as the festival’s main public celebration day rather than its entirety. For a village-based festival, the scale, road closures, main stage and full-day programme, marks it out as one of the bigger community events in South Dublin’s calendar.
