Mary Black at Vicar Street

At Vicar Street · 58-59 Thomas Street, Dublin 8

Mary Black performing at Vicar Street Dublin

Mary Black has been one of the defining voices of Irish music for more than forty years, and the September date at Vicar Street is part of her Slán tour - her farewell run of live shows across Ireland. Slán is the Irish word for goodbye, and that says everything about the weight of these evenings. If you have ever wanted to see her perform, this is the occasion to go. The audience will be a mix of lifelong fans and people who simply know that a chapter is closing, and the atmosphere will be something to remember long after the last song.

What to expect

Vicar Street holds around 1,050 in seated configuration, and Mary Black plays it as a seated show, which suits the music perfectly. Her band of long-standing musicians - including guitarist Bill Shanley, who has played with her for over thirty years - give the evening a warmth that arena shows cannot replicate. The songs range across her career: No Frontiers, Only a Woman’s Heart, Song for Ireland, and material from albums that have sold millions of copies across Ireland and beyond. Her voice has aged with real grace, and the live versions carry an emotional depth that recordings alone do not convey. Doors open at 7pm, giving you time to find your seat and settle in before the 8pm start.

Getting there

Vicar Street sits on Thomas Street in the Liberties, one of the oldest parts of Dublin city. From the city centre, it is a 15-minute walk from Dame Street, or a short trip on the 13, 40, or 123 Dublin Bus routes along Thomas Street. The Luas Red Line stops at Fatima and James’s - both a ten-minute walk from the venue. If you are driving, street parking on Thomas Street and surrounding roads is metered, and the Newmarket Square car park nearby is a practical option in the evening. Coming from outside Dublin, the M50 brings you in from most directions; allow extra time for city traffic on a Friday evening.

While you’re in Dublin

Thomas Street and the Liberties have more going on than most visitors realise - from the Guinness Storehouse a short walk away to the National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street. A pre-show meal in the area is easy to arrange, with plenty of places on Thomas Street and Francis Street. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
