Ballinrobe Festival 2026

At Ballinrobe Town · Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo

Ballinrobe Festival 2026

Every July, Ballinrobe sets aside nine full days for its town festival - a proper community celebration that has grown steadily since its modest beginnings in 2017 into one of south Mayo’s most anticipated events of the summer. It draws locals, returning emigrants, and visitors alike, and the programme is built to suit a crowd rather than a niche: horse racing, open-air concerts, traditional music, family sports days, and a pageant that dates back through the town’s social history. If you are passing through Mayo in the third week of July, it is worth timing your stop to catch at least a day of it.

What to expect

The festival opens on Saturday 18 July and runs through to Sunday 26 July, with something on every day in between. The Ballinrobe Racecourse - one of the oldest flat and National Hunt tracks in the country - sits at the centre of the racing calendar here, and the mid-week race meetings draw big crowds with their combination of flat racing, funfair attractions for children, and a race dance in the Mask Pavilion afterwards. Acts for the race dance in previous years have included Mike Denver and country and folk performers from across Ireland.

Open-air concerts in Cornmarket have become a festival tradition, reviving the “beat on the street” spirit of earlier decades. Tribute concerts - rock and pop - typically run on the opening and closing weekends without a ticket charge. Traditional music fans are well served too, with a Tradfest session early in the week that mixes live performance with family activities.

Community events fill the quieter days: heritage walks around the town, cinema nights at Ballinrobe Library, and a family sports day. The festival closes with the crowning of the Queen of the Lakes, a long-running local pageant held at the racecourse.

Pricing varies across the programme. The open-air Cornmarket concerts are free. Race meetings charge admission. Check the Ballinrobe Festival Facebook page closer to the date for the confirmed 2026 line-up and ticketing details, as the full programme is usually released in June or early July.

Getting there

Ballinrobe sits in south Co. Mayo, about 18 km south of Castlebar on the R334, and roughly an hour’s drive from Galway city via the N84. From Dublin, allow around two and a half hours on the M6 and N17 or N84. There is no direct rail service to Ballinrobe; the nearest stations are Claremorris (about 18 km east) and Castlebar. Bus Eireann serves the town on routes connecting Galway and Castlebar. During the festival, shuttle buses have operated between the town centre and the racecourse on race days - worth checking locally nearer the time. Town-centre parking is available on Abbey Street and around the square.

While you’re in Ballinrobe

The town sits on the River Robe with Lough Mask a short drive north - good for a walk or a bit of fishing before or after the festival. There is more to see in Ballinrobe and across Co. Mayo.
