A full week of science, robotics and design activities for children aged 6.5 to 12, the Designer Minds STEAM Summer Camp in Westport is the sort of summer week that genuinely holds a child’s attention. Designer Minds runs camps across Ireland and has built a solid reputation among parents for keeping activities practical, fast-paced and fun. This is not a screen-heavy programme - children are up on their feet, making things, breaking things apart and putting them back together. It suits curious kids who like to build and experiment, and equally those who respond well to trying everything once.
The week runs Monday to Friday, 6-10 July 2026, with sessions starting at 9am. Children are split into two age groups - Junior (1st to 3rd class, roughly ages 6.5 to 9) and Senior (4th to 6th class, ages 10 to 12) - so the pace and challenge level matches where each child is at.
Activities across the week typically include: dry ice experiments, building bridge structures, coding robots, chromatography T-shirt design, stop-motion animation with LEGO, circuits and ball-run engineering challenges. The balance between science experiments, technology tasks and art-based projects means attention doesn’t drift, and children tend to leave with something physical to show for the week - a T-shirt they printed, a short animation, a working circuit.

Westport is in south County Mayo on the Wild Atlantic Way, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes by road from Galway and about 3 hours from Dublin via the M6 and N5. Irish Rail runs services from Dublin Heuston to Westport (about 3 hours 15 minutes), and Bus Eireann connects the town to Galway, Sligo and other Mayo towns. Westport town is compact and walkable once you arrive; parking is available along the quays and in the town-centre car parks without much difficulty.
