At Dooagh Village · Dooagh, Achill Island, Co. Mayo
Dooagh Day is the annual village festival that Dooagh has run every second weekend of July since 2015. It started as a way to bring the community together and celebrate what makes this small Atlantic-edge village its own place - and it has stayed exactly that: volunteer-run, rooted in the village, and genuinely fun for families. If you are looking for a festival that feels like a real community throwing a party rather than a ticketed event staged for tourists, this is the one.
The festival draws on Dooagh’s traditions and its setting beside the water. Currach racing is one of the highlights - the traditional canvas-and-wood rowing boats that were once a working tool on the island are raced on the sea, and it draws a crowd. Alongside that there is music, games, food, and a historical element that connects the day to the village’s deeper story. The Dooagh Pipe Band, which has been rehearsing here since 1947, is part of that living tradition. Exact programming varies year to year - the festival runs across two days (11 and 12 July 2026) with activities at various times throughout both days. The Facebook page (search Dooagh Day) is the best place to follow updates as the date approaches.
Achill Island is reached by road across the Michael Davitt Bridge at Achill Sound - there is no ferry needed. From Westport the drive is around 45 minutes via the N59; from Castlebar allow about an hour. From Dublin it is roughly three hours on the M4/M17 and N5 through Castlebar or Westport. Bus Éireann runs services from Westport to Achill Sound, with onward local options, though a car gives you far more flexibility on the island. Dooagh sits at the western end of Achill, about 12 km beyond Keel - follow the main road through the island and keep going until the road runs out near the cliffs. Parking in the village is limited and informal; arriving early on both days makes sense.
Dooagh sits just a few minutes’ drive from Keem Bay, one of the most photographed beaches in Ireland, and the cliffs above it are worth the walk on a clear day. The island has enough to fill two or three days comfortably. There is more to see in Achill and across Co. Mayo.
