What to Expect

Men In The Box, a name lifted straight from Alice in Chains’ breakout single “Man in the Box”, is a tribute act built around the Seattle band’s heavy, downtuned catalogue of grunge and metal crossover songs. Alice in Chains were one of the defining bands of the early 1990s Seattle scene alongside Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, known for the close vocal harmonies between Layne Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell layered over slow, sludgy riffs, on songs like “Would?”, “Rooster” and “Man in the Box” itself. Expect a heavier night than a standard indie gig, thick guitar tone, minor key melodies and a set that leans into the darker end of the grunge catalogue rather than the more radio friendly side of the genre. Monroe’s Live’s stage and sound system are well suited to this kind of tribute booking, and the venue runs tribute nights across a wide range of genres through the autumn, this one sitting at the heavier end of that programme.

Getting There

Galway city is well connected from around the country, with Irish Rail running direct services from Dublin Heuston in around two hours fifteen minutes and Bus Eireann and Citylink both running frequent coaches from Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Monroe’s is on Dominick Street Upper in Galway’s West End, across the bridge from the Claddagh and about a 10 to 15 minute walk from Eyre Square and the train and bus station. There is a good choice of pubs and casual food along the West End for before the show.
