Monaghan U3A Book Club

At Monaghan Town Library, Peace Campus · Plantation Road, Monaghan, Co. Monaghan, H18 RP20

Library reading room set up for a book club meeting

Monaghan U3A’s book club meets in Monaghan Town Library at the Peace Campus at 2pm on the third Thursday of every month, with the next meeting on Thursday, 20 August 2026. It is one of the smaller, quieter groups within Monaghan U3A’s wider programme, using the library’s own space rather than the Four Seasons Hotel base most of the group’s other classes and talks run from.

What to expect

A traditional book club format: members read an agreed title over the month and come together to discuss it in the library, with the librarian’s meeting space giving the group access to the library’s own catalogue and reading recommendations for future months. Monaghan U3A is the largest University of the Third Age branch in the country, with around 700 members and a programme that spans everything from choir and art classes to Pilates and social dancing, mostly run out of the Four Seasons Hotel; the book club is one of the few strands that meets in the library instead, giving it a different, more bookish character than the hotel-based groups. It sits on the same third Thursday of the month as U3A’s “Poems and Pints” gathering in Ballinode, though the two run separately, one in the library in the afternoon and the other in a pub in the evening. New members are generally welcome to join a discussion before committing to future titles.
