Argentine Tango in Bray

Every Saturday afternoon, Holy Redeemer Parish Youth Centre in Bray turns its hall over to Argentine tango, run by teachers Lucia and Gerry. The pair have taught tango in Ireland for years and were appointed Corresponding Academicians of the National Academy of Tango in Buenos Aires, making them the only tango teachers in Ireland with that formal endorsement. Sessions run through the afternoon and evening, from a beginners’ class through to a social dance practica, so newcomers and experienced dancers can attend on the same Saturday without clashing.

What to expect

The afternoon is split into three parts: tango basics and fundamentals for complete beginners at 4pm, an intermediate and advanced class at 5pm, and a practica, a social dance session rather than a class, from 6pm to 8pm. Dancers can pay for a single class or the full evening, and discounted class packages are available for regulars. The hall has a proper sprung dance floor and a small refreshment area serving tea, coffee and snacks, so the practica in particular has the relaxed feel of a social evening rather than a formal lesson. Lucia and Gerry also run occasional seminars, workshops and milongas beyond the regular Saturday schedule, advertised through their Facebook page.

Getting there

Holy Redeemer Parish Youth Centre is on Herbert Road in Bray, a short walk from Bray town centre and about 15 minutes on foot from Bray DART station. A limited number of free parking spaces are available on site on a first-come basis, with paid parking nearby.

While you’re in Bray

Bray’s seafront and Main Street are a few minutes from Herbert Road, so it is easy to make an evening of it with dinner in town before or after class. There is more to see in Bray and across Co. Wicklow.
