A new gospel choir for Monaghan starts weekly rehearsals at the Garage Theatre on Monday, 7 September 2026, at 8:30pm. It is open to anyone who wants to sing, with no audition and no previous singing experience required, and it is being led by Dr Grainne Duffy, a musician and choir director with a PhD in music.
The choir learns a mix of traditional and contemporary gospel songs across the weekly sessions, working toward a live concert performance once the group has built up its repertoire. Sessions are pitched as a supportive, low-pressure environment rather than a formal audition-based choir, so the first few weeks are likely to focus on voice basics, part-singing and building confidence within the group before moving on to fuller arrangements. The Garage Theatre is providing the room for the sessions, which puts the choir in a proper performance space with decent acoustics rather than a hall or community centre, and gives it an obvious venue to eventually perform in once a concert is scheduled.
