At Iveagh Gardens · Clonmel Street, Dublin 2
Few acts can fill a summer garden and have the whole crowd dancing from the first bar, but Nile Rodgers & Chic manage it every time. This is one of the most joyful nights the Iveagh Gardens calendar offers - a band with a back catalogue so deep and familiar that the set feels less like a concert and more like a communal singalong under the Dublin sky. If you have any feeling for classic disco, funk, or the records that shaped the last five decades of pop, this is an easy evening to say yes to.
Nile Rodgers has written, produced, or performed on records that have sold over 500 million copies worldwide. The setlist runs from Chic’s own Le Freak, Good Times, Everybody Dance, and I Want Your Love through to songs he shaped for others - David Bowie’s Let’s Dance, Madonna’s Like a Virgin, and Daft Punk’s Get Lucky. Rodgers has been coming to Ireland so regularly it is almost a residency at this point. The band are tight and energetic, and the crowd arrives ready.
The Iveagh Gardens holds up to 5,000 people and has a reputation as one of the most intimate large outdoor venues in Dublin. The sunken lawns give good sightlines from most spots, and the gardens themselves - fountains, a yew maze, and a cascade water feature built from rock samples representing all 32 counties - lend the evening a character you do not get at a stadium. Dress for Irish July; layers are rarely wasted.
Iveagh Gardens is on Clonmel Street, Dublin 2, with the main entrance off Harcourt Street. The Luas Green Line stops at Harcourt, a two-minute walk from the gates. Dublin Bus serves Harcourt Street from most parts of the city, and Grafton Street is a 15-minute walk. Parking nearby is scarce on a summer evening - public transport is the practical choice.
Camden Street, Grafton Street, and the National Concert Hall are all within easy walking distance. A pre-show dinner in the area makes a full evening of it. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
