At Triskel Christchurch · Tobin Street, Cork City, Co. Cork
Wes Anderson’s latest film arrives at one of Ireland’s finest arthouse cinemas for four evenings across the first week of July. The Phoenician Scheme is a black comedy spy thriller - stylish, deadpan, and densely populated with memorable faces - and Triskel Christchurch is exactly the kind of space it deserves. If you enjoy cinema that rewards attention and rewards it again on the way home, this is worth planning an evening around.
Benicio del Toro plays Anatole “Zsa-Zsa” Korda, a maverick European business magnate who is simultaneously dodging assassination attempts and trying to reconcile with his estranged daughter, Sister Liesl - played by Mia Threapleton. The plot folds in an ambitious infrastructure project in Phoenicia, and the cast around them includes Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, and Richard Ayoade. It is, in other words, a full Wes Anderson ensemble piece: symmetrical frames, pastel palettes, clipped dialogue, and an emotional sincerity that sneaks up on you. The film runs 101 minutes and is rated 12A.
Triskel Christchurch is a neoclassical Georgian church converted into a state-of-the-art cultural venue. The main auditorium retains the bones of the original building and seats feel close to the screen in the best possible way. Screenings are on Sunday 6 July at 4pm and Monday to Wednesday 7-9 July at 8pm. Doors open 15 minutes before the stated time; the cinema starts promptly.
Cork City is served by Bus Eireann and the Cork commuter rail network, with Kent Station about a 20-minute walk from the city centre. If travelling by car from Dublin, the M8 motorway runs directly into Cork and takes roughly two and a half hours. Triskel Christchurch is on Tobin Street, just off South Mall and a short walk from Patrick Street. Street parking in the surrounding city-centre streets operates on pay-and-display during the day; for evening screenings (the 8pm shows), parking is generally easier and several multi-storey car parks on the South Mall and Grand Parade are within five minutes on foot.
Cork City rewards a few extra hours before or after a film. The English Market is a ten-minute walk and stays open into the early evening on weekdays; the Crawford Art Gallery on Emmett Place is free to enter. There is more to see in Cork and across Co. Cork.
