Pilgrim Pass: Castle and Devenish Island Boat Tour

Enniskillen Castle Museums and the Erne Water Taxi run a combined Pilgrim Pass through the summer, pairing castle admission with a guided 1.5 hour boat tour that calls at the early Christian monastic site on Devenish Island. The pass has been running since 1 July and stays valid for daily bookings until 31 August 2026, with boats departing the Castle Museums Jetty at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm. An adult ticket costs GBP 29.50, with reduced rates for children and a saving built in when up to eight people book together.

What to expect

Devenish Island sits in Lough Erne a short boat ride from Enniskillen and holds one of Fermanagh’s most complete early Christian sites, founded in the sixth century by St Molaise. The ruins include a well-preserved round tower that visitors can normally climb, the remains of an Augustinian priory, a high cross and a scatter of carved grave slabs, all cared for as a state monument. On the water taxi crossing, local guides talk through the island’s monastic history and the story of the lough itself, before landing for time to walk the site. The castle admission included in the pass can be used either before or after the boat trip, so it suits a full day out that combines Fermanagh County Museum’s exhibits with the outdoor monastic site, or two shorter visits on different days within the pass’s validity window.

Getting there

Boats leave from the Castle Museums Jetty directly behind Enniskillen Castle, in the town centre and within walking distance of the bus station and main car parks. No separate transport to Devenish Island is needed, since the boat crossing is included in the pass.

Enniskillen’s compact centre makes it easy to fit the castle side of the pass around lunch or a walk along the Erne. There is more to see in Enniskillen and across Co. Fermanagh.
