REGENESIS, a mid-career retrospective of painter Vincent Devine, opened at Esker Arts in Tullamore with a reception on Saturday 4 July 2026 and continues in the gallery until Saturday 26 September.
The show traces roughly two decades of Devine’s work, opening with early portraiture that explores historical figures with a psychological depth the artist has linked to Van Gogh’s influence, before moving into automatic drawings and intuitive pieces that dig into the subconscious mind, gesture and spontaneity rather than fixed subjects. A more recent body of work grew directly out of collaborations with cancer researchers and patients, using symbolism and layered imagery to make complex scientific and emotional material visible on canvas, so this section of the show works as much as a document of art used for communication as a display of technique. Devine has described the exhibition as reflecting “an artist in transition”, looking back across two decades of practice while pointing toward directions still taking shape, and the retrospective format means a single visit lets a visitor trace real change in a working artist’s approach rather than see a themed selection of similar recent pieces. The gallery sits inside Esker Arts’ Victorian former shopfront building on High Street, in one of the two stacked exhibition spaces the centre uses for its visual arts programme.
Esker Arts is on High Street in Tullamore town centre, a short walk from the car parks around O’Connor Square and Church Street and from the town’s Bus Eireann stop. Tullamore railway station, on the Dublin Heuston to Galway and Westport line, is about 15 minutes on foot, and the N52 and N80 both pass through the town.
The gallery is a good stop on a walk around Tullamore town centre, close to the Grand Canal harbour and the Tullamore D.E.W. distillery quarter. There is more to see across Co. Offaly.
