At Various Venues · County Wexford
Scór na nÓg is the GAA’s youth cultural competition - a chance for young people aged under 17 to take the stage and represent their club in song, dance, storytelling, and music. Wexford GAA runs its county series through June and July, with clubs competing at district level before the best advance to the county final. If you have children involved in a local GAA club, or you enjoy watching young talent perform Irish cultural traditions with real commitment, this is a fine way to spend an evening.
The competition covers eight disciplines: solo singing, instrumental music, recitation (Scéalaíocht), ballad group, figure dancing, set dancing, Nuachleas (a novelty act category that tends to produce the most inventive entries), and a table quiz. Each club selects participants from internal rounds, so by the county stage you are watching young people who have already proved themselves within their own community.
The atmosphere at Scór evenings is warm and community-focused - GAA halls packed with families, coaches, and local support. It is not a glossy production; it is a proper local competition where the appeal is watching young people keep Irish language and culture alive. Wexford GAA uses a rolling venue system across its districts (New Ross, Wexford, Gorey, and Enniscorthy), with a county final bringing all strands together. Co. Wexford is well connected from Dublin via the M11/N11, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes to Wexford town. Irish Rail runs regular services on the Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort line, with stops at Wexford and Enniscorthy - both useful depending on which district venue is hosting. Bus Eireann routes also serve Wexford town and the larger county towns. As venues for Scór nights are typically community halls and GAA clubhouses, parking is usually available on-site or along adjacent roads.
The county has plenty to hold you longer than an evening - from the medieval streetscape of Wexford town and the maritime history of Kilmore Quay to the wide beaches along the south coast. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
