Scor Sinsear - Wexford

Scór Sinsear is the GAA’s adult cultural competition - a celebration of traditional Irish arts that runs alongside the football and hurling calendar rather than replacing it. Wexford GAA organises county-level rounds during the summer months, bringing performers from clubs across the county together to compete in eight disciplines rooted in Irish tradition. If you have a passing interest in trad music, céilí dancing, or the kind of comedy sketch that only makes full sense to people who grew up in a GAA county, this is an evening worth knowing about.

What to expect

Each competing club fields participants across some or all of the eight Scór disciplines: solo singing, ballad group, instrumental music, figure dancing (céilí), set dancing, recitation/scéalaíocht (storytelling), Nuachleas (novelty act), and table quiz. The standard varies - some acts are polished, others are gloriously ambitious - but the atmosphere in the hall is consistently warm and loud. The county rounds determine who advances to the Leinster provincial stage, and provincial winners go on to the All-Ireland Final. Wexford has a solid tradition in Scór, and county finals in particular draw strong club turnouts with supporters travelling from every corner of the county.

The July competitions are typically qualifying rounds or divisional heats rather than the county showpiece, so expect a mixture of clubs testing their performers ahead of the main county final later in the year. Specific venues are confirmed closer to the date by Wexford GAA - check wexford.gaa.ie for the most up-to-date location information.

Getting there

Wexford town sits at the south-east tip of Ireland, roughly 140km from Dublin. The N11/M11 motorway connects Dublin directly to Wexford in about 90 minutes; from Waterford the N25 runs east along the coast. Irish Rail operates regular services on the Rosslare Europort line, with Wexford station in the town centre. If the competition runs outside the town - in a rural GAA hall, which is common for early rounds - you will need your own transport, as public buses do not serve most club grounds in the evenings. Parking at GAA halls throughout Wexford is generally straightforward; arrive a few minutes early if you want a decent seat rather than standing at the back.

While you’re in Wexford

Wexford town has a compact medieval streetscape, a good harbour, and a strong arts scene that punches above its size. The county itself stretches from the Wicklow border to Hook Head, with some of the sunniest coastline in Ireland. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
