What to Expect

The Seattle Grunge Experience is a tribute night built around the early 1990s Seattle scene rather than a single band, working through material associated with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, the four acts most credited with turning grunge from a regional Pacific Northwest sound into a global rock movement after Nirvana’s “Nevermind” broke through in 1991. Expect heavy, downtuned guitar tone, flannel and denim adjacent stagecraft, and a set list built around the genre’s best known singles, “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Alive”, “Black” and “Would?” all plausible inclusions given the range the format covers. This is a later, louder booking on the same night as Monroe’s Live’s earlier Kris Drever show, aimed at a different crowd entirely, more standing room rock night than seated listening room. It fits a pattern Monroe’s Live has run through the autumn of covering a wide spread of genres and eras across a single week, from folk to metal to pure pop.

Getting There

Galway city is well connected from around the country, with Irish Rail running direct services from Dublin Heuston in around two hours fifteen minutes and Bus Eireann and Citylink both running frequent coaches from Dublin, Limerick and Cork into the city’s train and bus station. Monroe’s is on Dominick Street Upper in Galway’s West End, across the bridge from the Claddagh and about a 10 to 15 minute walk from that station and from Eyre Square, with taxis easy to find nearby given the late finish.
