Every Sunday morning, Smithfield Market Square fills up with traders laying out antiques, vintage goods, collectibles and all manner of second-hand finds. It is a proper rummage market - the kind where you might turn up a set of old prints, a box of vinyl, a piece of jewellery or a bit of bric-a-brac that has been around longer than anyone can account for. There is no admission charge, and no obligation to buy, which makes it an easy way to spend a Sunday morning if you happen to be in the city.
Stalls typically carry a mix of antiques, vintage items, collectibles and general goods - dealers and private sellers trading side by side. The mood is unhurried, which suits the format. Collectors come to look as much as to buy, and conversation between traders and browsers is part of the atmosphere. Serious antique hunters tend to arrive early when the best pieces are still on the table; if you are after something specific, getting there soon after opening at 9am is the sensible move. The square itself gives the market room to breathe - Smithfield is one of the larger public spaces in the city, with a long history as a trading ground going back to the 17th century, when it served as Dublin’s main livestock market and hosted monthly horse fairs that continued for over 300 years.
Smithfield is in Dublin 7, on the north side of the Liffey, roughly ten minutes on foot from the city centre. The Red Line Luas stops at Smithfield (or the nearby Four Courts stop), making it straightforward to reach by tram from anywhere along that line. Several Dublin Bus routes serve the area, and it is a reasonable walk from O’Connell Street. Street parking exists in the surrounding roads, but availability on a Sunday morning depends on how early you arrive.
