Tour of St Finbarr's Hospital and Cork Union Workhouse Buildings

At St Finbarr's Hospital · Douglas Road, Cork City

St Finbarr's Hospital, formerly Cork Union Workhouse, on Douglas Road

One of the more sobering walks you can take in Cork city, this free guided tour brings you through the buildings that began as Cork’s Union Workhouse in 1841 and today form part of St Finbarr’s Hospital on Douglas Road. Organised by local historian and councillor Kieran McCarthy as part of National Heritage Week, it covers the full arc of the site - from its opening as a place of last resort for the city’s poor, through the catastrophe of the Great Famine, and on to its long second life as a public hospital. It suits anyone with an interest in Irish social history, Famine research, or the kind of built heritage that tends to get overlooked because it never stopped being useful.

What to expect

The workhouse was designed by George Wilkinson, the Poor Law Commissioners’ architect who built dozens of similar institutions across Ireland, and opened on 23 December 1841. Built to hold 2,000 inmates, it was overwhelmed within years: by the height of the Famine in the mid-1840s, more than 5,000 people were sheltering within its walls and in sheds on the grounds.

The original layout followed Wilkinson’s standard plan - an entrance block to the north, a central block with male and female wings, and working areas to the rear including a bakehouse, washhouse, dining hall, chapel, and infirmary. Much of this structure survives and is visible on the tour. After independence the site became the South Cork County Home, and by 1960 the medical sections had merged into St Finbarr’s Hospital, which still operates today.

The guided walk takes approximately two hours and is led on foot around the grounds and surviving buildings. No booking is required - meet just inside the gates on Douglas Road at 11:00am.

Getting there

St Finbarr’s Hospital is on Douglas Road, roughly 2km south of Cork city centre. Bus Eireann and Cork City Bus routes serving the Douglas Road corridor stop close by. If driving, Douglas Road is straightforward to reach from the South Ring Road (N40); parking is generally available on surrounding streets. Cork city centre itself is walkable in about 25 minutes, or a short taxi or bus ride away.
