Talk and Tour at Wicklow Hospice

Wicklow Hospice at Magheramore opens its doors for a free “Talk and Tour” community evening on Thursday 10 September 2026, held during Palliative Care Week. Run by Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services, the event is aimed at local people who want to understand what the hospice actually does, rather than at patients or families currently using its services.

What to expect

Over the course of an hour, from 7pm to 8pm, attendees hear directly from staff members of the hospice’s multi-disciplinary team about the palliative care services provided at Magheramore, followed by a short guided tour of the Palliative Care Unit itself. Complimentary refreshments are served, and the format is designed to be informal, with time built in for visitors to ask questions about how local hospice care works, who it is for, and how families access it. Because Wicklow Hospice runs on charitable funding as well as HSE support, awareness evenings like this also serve to introduce the hospice to potential future volunteers, donors and fundraisers, even though the event itself is not a fundraising appeal.

Palliative Care Week itself is a national awareness campaign, and Wicklow Hospice’s evening is its local expression, giving the wider community a rare chance to see behind the doors of a service most people only encounter at a difficult time in their own lives. Staff use the session to explain how a referral works, what day-to-day life on the unit looks like for patients and families, and how the hospice’s team of nurses, doctors, social workers and chaplains work together. It is aimed squarely at the general public rather than healthcare professionals, so no prior knowledge of palliative care is assumed.

Getting there

Wicklow Hospice is at Magheramore, just south of Wicklow town, and is most easily reached by car given its edge-of-town location. Free on-site parking removes the need to plan for street parking.
