Croí Glan Integrated Dance Company brings The Act of Existing, a contemporary dance duet, to Backstage Theatre on Wednesday 30 September 2026 at 8pm. Choreographed by Philip Connaughton for the West Cork-based integrated dance company, the piece is performed by Bobbi Byrne and Ben Sullivan and examines what it means to exist alongside another person when the rules of the encounter keep shifting. Croí Glan describes itself as an integrated dance company, meaning its work is made with and performed by disabled and non-disabled dancers together, a practice that shapes how the company approaches questions of control, consent and connection on stage.
The work is described by the company as a provocative duet that invites the audience into a live encounter where influence is never straightforward and responsibility is never neutral. Byrne and Sullivan navigate a series of shifting choices and boundaries on stage, with the piece examining how marginalised communities have historically been subject to societal control, a theme the company frames as urgent in the current climate. Croí Glan is co-led by Tara Brandel and Bobbi Byrne, with design by Emily Ní Bhroin, composition by Luca Truffarelli and Federico Ortica, and production by Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin. The performance contains strobe lighting and is recommended for audiences aged 18 and over.
