What to Expect

The Lemonheads are a long running American alternative rock band fronted by Evan Dando, who broke through internationally with the 1992 album “It’s a Shame About Ray” and its Simon and Garfunkel cover “Mrs. Robinson”, a record that helped define the melodic, fuzzy edged side of early 1990s college rock alongside acts like Dinosaur Jr. and Teenage Fanclub. The band’s line up has shifted many times over the decades around Dando as the constant, but the songs, hooky, slightly ragged, built on strong pop melodies under a wall of guitar, have held up well enough that they remain a genuine draw on the club circuit. This is a significant booking for a room the size of Monroe’s Live, a band with a real chart history and back catalogue playing a venue that size rather than a large theatre, which tends to make for a more direct, less filtered show than a bigger stage would. Expect a set weighted toward the early 1990s albums with room for newer material.

Getting There

Galway city is well connected from around the country, with Irish Rail running direct services from Dublin Heuston in around two hours fifteen minutes and Bus Eireann and Citylink both running frequent coaches from Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Monroe’s is on Dominick Street Upper in Galway’s West End, across the bridge from the Claddagh and about a 10 to 15 minute walk from Eyre Square and the train and bus station, with plenty of pubs and casual food nearby for before or after the show.
