The Phantom of the Opera at Bord Gais Energy Theatre

At Bord Gais Energy Theatre · Grand Canal Square, Docklands, Dublin 2

Phantom of the Opera at Bord Gais Energy Theatre Dublin

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera is the longest-running musical in West End history, and this autumn it returns to Dublin for a three-week run at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, it follows a disfigured musical genius who haunts the cellars beneath the Paris Opera House and becomes consumed by his obsession with a young soprano, Christine Daaé. More than 100 million people have seen it worldwide since it first opened in London in 1986. If you have never caught it live, this is a rare chance to do so in Ireland, and if you have seen it before, the staging tends to hold up to repeat visits.

What to expect

The production runs to around two hours and 35 minutes. The set pieces that audiences come for are all present - the famous chandelier that drops towards the stalls, the candlelit boat crossing the underground lake, and the Phantom’s lair beneath the stage. The score includes ‘The Music of the Night’, ‘All I Ask of You’, ‘Think of Me’, and the title number, performed by a full cast and live orchestra. Evening performances begin at 7:30pm, with matinees on selected days during the run. Bord Gáis Energy Theatre is Ireland’s largest fixed-seat auditorium - 2,100 seats across the stalls and circles - so sightlines are good from most parts of the house. The venue has wide foyers and bars on each level, worth arriving 20 to 30 minutes early to settle in.

Getting there

Bord Gáis Energy Theatre sits on Grand Canal Square in the Docklands, a short walk from the Grand Canal Dock Dart station (roughly eight minutes on foot from Pearse Street station). Several Dublin Bus routes serve the Docklands along the quays. The red Luas line has a stop at The Point, about a 10-minute walk along the waterfront. If you are driving, paid car parking is available at Grand Canal Square and in nearby Ringsend Road car parks, though spaces fill quickly on show nights so allow extra time.

While you’re in Dublin

The Docklands neighbourhood around the theatre has changed considerably over the past 20 years - the square itself has restaurants and bars that are busy on show nights. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
