The Wiz is Galway’s annual summer musical, staged by Twin Productions at the Black Box Theatre following on from 2025’s sold-out Peter Pan the Musical. It is a funky, modern retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, blending rock, gospel and soul music by Charlie Smalls with the book by William F. Brown, the same show that was a smash hit on Broadway in 1975. The story follows Dorothy as a tornado sweeps her from Kansas to the land of Oz, where she teams up with the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion and follows the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, meeting witches, winged monkeys and plenty of colourful characters along the way. The production is directed by Seán Power, with musical and chorus direction by Emma Brogan and choreography by Declan J. Gardiner, and runs 135 minutes including an interval. The show includes strobe lighting at points, which is worth knowing if you are bringing a child who is sensitive to flashing lights.
The Black Box Theatre is on Dyke Road in Galway city, a short walk from Galway Cathedral and the Salmon Weir Bridge. The Town Hall Theatre box office, which handles all Black Box bookings, is at Courthouse Square, Galway H91 H3C2. On-street parking is limited near the theatre; the Cathedral car park and the Fairgreen car park are both within easy walking distance.
