At Roisin Dubh · Upper Dominick Street, Galway City, Co. Galway
THUMPER are a Dublin band built around an unusual line up, two drummers and four guitarists among their ranks, which gives their live show a wall of sound approach that leans into noise rock and shoegaze as much as conventional indie guitar music. That extra rhythm section means the songs hit harder live than a standard four piece could manage, with interlocking guitar parts stacked over a double drum attack that has been compared to a band punching well above its weight for a small venue. Expect a loud, physical set, more about volume and repetition building into release than tight pop structure, and a band who have built a reputation on the Irish DIY circuit for shows that feel like an event rather than a background gig. Roisin Dubh’s standing room and strong sound system suit a band like this far better than a seated theatre would, and the room’s compact size means the wall of guitars will genuinely fill it.
Galway city is well connected from around the country, with Irish Rail running direct services from Dublin Heuston in around two hours fifteen minutes and Bus Eireann and Citylink both running frequent coaches from Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Roisin Dubh is on Upper Dominick Street in Galway’s West End, about a 10 to 15 minute walk from Eyre Square and the train and bus station on Station Road. The surrounding streets have a strong choice of bars either side of the venue for before or after the show.
