Tommy Tiernan in Conversation with Anne Waldman

At Patrick Kavanagh Centre · Inniskeen, Co. Monaghan A91 KT20

Patrick Kavanagh Centre stage set for the Tommy Tiernan and Anne Waldman conversation

Comedian and chat show host Tommy Tiernan sits down with American poet Anne Waldman at the Patrick Kavanagh Centre in Inniskeen on Saturday, 26 September 2026, in a conversation billed as the headline event of Kavanagh Weekend. Waldman, a key figure of the Beat Generation and a friend and collaborator of Allen Ginsberg, joins Tiernan alongside curators Adrian Dunbar and Nick Roth for a wide-ranging talk touching on poetry, performance, counterculture and artistic freedom, staged in the centre built around the life of poet Patrick Kavanagh.

What to expect

Doors open at 7:15pm for an 8pm start. This is not a stand-up set: Tiernan, known as much for his RTÉ chat show and his own history as a touring storyteller as for his stand-up, takes the role of interviewer and provocateur across from Waldman, whose decades of poetry and performance stretch back to the Beat scene of 1960s New York and her long association with the Naropa Institute. The conversation forms part of the 2026 Kavanagh Weekend programme curated by Unreal Cities, the initiative founded by actor and director Adrian Dunbar and composer and saxophonist Nick Roth, who join the stage alongside the two headline guests. Expect a loose, talk-show format rather than a scripted event, with the focus on the overlap between Kavanagh’s own outsider voice and the Beat writers Waldman represents.

Getting there

The Patrick Kavanagh Centre is in the middle of Inniskeen village, signposted off the R178 between Carrickmacross and Dundalk. There is no direct bus service into the village, so travelling by car is the practical option, with parking available around the centre itself.

While you’re in Inniskeen

Inniskeen is a small village shaped almost entirely by its connection to Patrick Kavanagh, from the Centre to the fields and lanes he wrote about. There is more to see in Inniskeen and across Co. Monaghan, including the walking routes through Kavanagh Country that surround the village.
