At Waterford Greenway · Waterford Greenway, Co. Waterford
West Waterford Athletic Club runs its annual Greenway Half Marathon on Saturday, 29 August 2026, starting at 9:00am and following 13.1 miles of the old Waterford to Dungarvan railway line that now forms the Waterford Greenway. The club, founded in 1994, has built the race into one of the best-known half marathons in the south east, helped by a route that is genuinely flat, a rarity for the distance in Ireland.
The course runs along the Greenway, which opened officially in 2017 on the trackbed of the old Waterford to Dungarvan railway, and it is billed as one of the flattest half marathon routes in the country, with a net elevation drop of around 100 metres over the 13.1 miles. That makes it a genuine target race for runners chasing a personal best, as well as an accessible half marathon for people doing the distance for the first time. Entries are capped at 750 and open on 1 July through Eventmaster.ie, with every finisher getting a specially commissioned Greenway dri-fit t-shirt. This year’s race supports the West Waterford Athletic Club Track Fund, the club’s campaign to bring an eight-lane running track to Dungarvan, so entry fees go toward that project as well as covering the race itself. Prize-giving and refreshments follow immediately after the race at Ballinroad Soccer Club, close to the finish line.
The Waterford Greenway runs between Waterford city and Dungarvan, and the half marathon’s finish area near Ballinroad is a short drive from Dungarvan town centre. Bus Eireann’s Waterford to Cork route stops in Dungarvan, and organisers typically provide details closer to race day on parking and any shuttle arrangements for runners and support crews.
Dungarvan is the natural base for a Greenway race weekend, with the harbour, town centre and the rest of the Greenway trail all close to the finish at Ballinroad. There is more to see in Dungarvan and across Co. Waterford.
