Garter Lane Arts Centre screens the National Theatre Live broadcast of Frankenstein on Saturday, 31 October 2026, at 7:30pm, a fitting Halloween night slot for Nick Dear’s gothic stage adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel. The production was first staged at the National Theatre in London in 2011 under Danny Boyle’s direction, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature across the run, a device that let each performance reframe which character the audience was asked to sympathise with. Both actors shared the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for the production, and it remains one of the most acclaimed stage adaptations of the novel to date. The NT Live broadcast brings the multi camera coverage and close up detail the series is known for to a Waterford screen, giving local audiences access to a landmark London production without travelling to see it live. Garter Lane has run NT Live screenings for several seasons now as part of its wider film and theatre crossover programme, alongside its own home grown theatre productions and its Waterford Film For All cinema strand, which opened its autumn season with a 25th anniversary screening of Amelie in August.
