Jack Cunningham Productions stage West Side Story at Theatre Royal Waterford for five performances, Tuesday 1 to Saturday 5 September 2026, at 8pm nightly. The production retells Romeo and Juliet as a story of young lovers caught between prejudice and warring street gangs, using Leonard Bernstein’s score performed live rather than to a backing track. Tickets cost €28.50.
The Theatre Royal’s own description promises captivating choreography, magical music, classy costumes and a live orchestra, and a live band is a significant commitment for a company working outside the professional touring circuit, putting this production in a different bracket to typical amateur staging. Jack Cunningham Productions also staged A Musical Sensation at Garter Lane earlier in the summer, and West Side Story represents the company’s larger scale autumn production on the bigger Theatre Royal stage, with a five night run reflecting the scale of the show. Expect full company numbers, the extended dance sequences the show is built around, and a story that still carries weight nearly seventy years after it first opened on Broadway.
Theatre Royal Waterford is on the Mall in the city centre, within the Viking Triangle and close to Reginald’s Tower and the Quay. The box office operates Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, and Saturday, 12pm to 4pm, for phone and in person bookings.
