Council offices building where planning documents are on public display

Westmeath County Council’s Part VIII public consultation on a new active travel scheme from Mullingar Courthouse to Saunders Bridge closes at 4pm on Tuesday 15 September 2026, giving residents a six-week window to view the plans and make a formal submission. The proposed route runs through Mount Street, Mount Street Gardens, Jail Hill, Sunday’s Well Road, Auburn Road, the Town Park, Millmount Road and Ballinderry Road, and the consultation opened on 4 August 2026.

What to expect

The scheme includes footpath upgrades, junction improvements at eight locations to make crossing safer, new and upgraded pedestrian crossings, roughly 1.1 kilometres of new protected cycle track, and traffic calming measures along the route. Full plans can be inspected in person at Westmeath County Council’s offices at Aras an Chontae, Mount Street, Mullingar, weekdays from 9:30am to 4pm, and the documents are also available to view online through the council’s consultation portal. Anyone wishing to comment can make a submission online via the portal or in writing to the Planning Department, and the council asks that submissions be labelled “LAM 6 - Active Travel Mullingar Courthouse to Saunder’s Bridge” and include the sender’s contact details. Note that the in-person display period is shorter than the submission window: the plans are on view at Aras an Chontae only until 1 September, while submissions stay open for a further two weeks after that.

Getting there

Aras an Chontae is Westmeath County Council’s headquarters on Mount Street in Mullingar town centre, an easy walk from the town’s shops and the courthouse the scheme takes its name from.

While you’re in Mullingar

The proposed route touches some of Mullingar’s oldest streets, from the courthouse down through Jail Hill towards the Royal Canal at Saunders Bridge. There is more to see in Mullingar and across Co. Westmeath.
