Athlone Film Club opens its new season at the Dean Crowe Theatre on Saturday, 12 September 2026 with a screening of The Blue Caftan, doors 7:30pm for an 8pm start. Set up in 2008 under the patronage of the Dean Crowe Theatre Trust, the club gives local audiences the chance to see world and classic cinema that rarely reaches Westmeath’s commercial screens, and it returns for a new run of films through the autumn and into next year.
Each screening is a single film shown on the Dean Crowe Theatre’s own screen, with no membership required, cash on the door and the same relaxed, single-showing format the club has run since 2008. The previous season opened in September 2025 and continued with regular evenings through to February 2026, taking in titles such as On Falling, Borgo, Santosh and The Ballad of Wallis Island alongside French and other international releases. The programme leans towards festival and arthouse titles rather than current multiplex releases, chosen to bring films to Athlone that would otherwise bypass the town entirely. Screenings are held on selected evenings rather than a strict weekly slot, so it is worth checking the club’s Facebook page or the Dean Crowe Theatre listing before each one.
The Dean Crowe Theatre is on Chapel Street in Athlone town centre, close to the Shannon and within walking distance of the main shopping streets. Athlone railway station, on the Dublin to Galway Irish Rail line, is around a fifteen minute walk away, and the theatre is close to the town’s central bus stops and car parks.
