At Various Venues · County Wexford
The Wexford Ladies Senior Football Championship is the top tier of women’s club football in the county, running from July through to the September finals. If you want to see competitive Gaelic football played with real intensity - without the crowds and prices of inter-county days - an afternoon at a club ground during this championship is as good as it gets. It suits anyone who enjoys the GAA, wants to support women’s sport, or is just visiting Wexford on a summer Sunday and wants something local to walk into.
Wexford LGFA has built the county championship into a genuine competition over recent decades. Club sides from across the county contest it at their own grounds, which means fixtures are spread through towns and villages rather than centralised to a single venue. The standard is high - Shelmaliers dominated the competition from 2018 to 2023, and Clonee took the 2024 title after a competitive run through the draw. You can expect fast, physical football with tight semi-finals and a final that tends to draw strong local support.
The GAA Centre of Excellence in Ferns serves as a central training base for county sides and is worth knowing about if you are travelling mid-week, but championship rounds are played at the home grounds of the participating clubs. Check the Wexford LGFA fixtures page before travelling, as venues and throw-in times for individual rounds are confirmed as the draw progresses. Entry at club grounds is typically paid at the gate, with modest admission.
Wexford town sits at the south-east tip of the country, roughly two hours from Dublin by road via the M11 and N25. Bus Eireann and Irish Rail both serve Wexford town. The Rosslare Europort Dart runs from Dublin Connolly through Wexford town and on to Rosslare, making it straightforward to arrive without a car if fixtures happen to fall at venues near the rail line.
Because matches take place at club grounds spread across the county, you will generally need a car or local lift to reach them outside the town. Club grounds almost always have on-site or roadside parking, and there is no charge for it.
Wexford is a county that rewards a longer visit - the Wexford Heritage Trail, the Hook Lighthouse peninsula, and the long sandy stretches at Curracloe are all close by. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
