What to Expect

Two of British rave’s founding names share a booth for one night at Wigwam, timed to catch the crowd spilling out of The Prodigy and Carl Cox’s Dublin show earlier that evening. Altern 8, the Stafford duo behind a run of early-90s rave anthems and known for performing in chemical-warfare suits and fluorescent dust masks, play back to back with Slipmatt, one of the original hardcore and jungle DJs from the same era. The set runs from 11pm to 3am in Wigwam’s basement room, built for exactly this kind of loud, sweaty, all-night electronic night. Expect breakbeat, hardcore and old-school rave records rather than a polished modern techno set - this is a night built on nostalgia for the sound that started it all, played by the people who made it.

Wigwam on Middle Abbey Street has built a reputation over the past few years as one of Dublin’s more interesting club spaces, hosting everything from underground techno bookings to bigger touring names, and a night like this - explicitly pitched as an afterparty for a stadium-adjacent gig - is typical of how it programmes around the city’s bigger concerts.

Getting There

Middle Abbey Street is a short walk from O’Connell Street in Dublin city centre. The Luas Red Line stops at Abbey Street, directly outside, and Connolly Station is a five-minute walk away. Given the 3am finish, Nitelink buses run through the night on several routes from nearby O’Connell Street, and there is usually a taxi rank working the area late on weekend nights. Driving is not really practical given the finish time and the lack of nearby late-night parking, so plan your route home before you head in.

While You’re in Dublin

Middle Abbey Street sits right in the middle of the city centre, close to O’Connell Street, the Ha’Penny Bridge and the whole Temple Bar stretch on the other side of the river, so there is plenty within walking distance if you want to make a longer night of it either side of the set.
