World Arepa Day Dublin

At D Two · D Two, Dublin

World Arepa Day Dublin

Every second Saturday in September, Venezuelan communities around the world mark World Arepa Day - a celebration of one of South America’s oldest and most beloved foods. In Dublin, the occasion lands at D Two on Harcourt Street, a well-known city centre venue with a lively beer garden, and entry is free. If you have never had an arepa before, this is a good moment to try one. If you already know them, you will not need much persuading.

What to expect

The arepa is a round flatbread made from ground maize - a staple that goes back more than 2,000 years in what is now Venezuela and Colombia. World Arepa Day was started in 2012 by VenMundo, an organisation representing Venezuelans living abroad, to celebrate that food tradition and the culture it carries. Dublin’s event at D Two brings Venezuelan arepas and Latin American music together under one roof, giving the afternoon the feel of an outdoor street-food market transplanted inside. Expect the arepas themselves to be stuffed - common fillings include shredded beef, black beans, avocado, and cheese - alongside the general warmth and noise that tends to come with a free-admission Latin American gathering. The music helps too.

D Two is a sizeable venue spread across a bar, a garden, and a club space at 60 Harcourt Street. The beer garden in particular is popular on fine September afternoons, and the event starts at 1pm, which gives you a solid few hours in good light. Come hungry.

Getting there

D Two sits on Harcourt Street in Dublin 2, a short walk from St Stephen’s Green and a two-minute stroll from Harcourt Luas stop on the Green Line. Most of Dublin’s city bus routes pass close by. If you are driving in, parking on Harcourt Street and the surrounding area is metered during the day; the Cuffe Street multi-storey car park nearby is a reliable option if street spots are full.

While you’re in Dublin

Harcourt Street puts you minutes from St Stephen’s Green, the Iveagh Gardens, and the cultural quarter around Camden Street. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
