Within an hour of Dublin city centre, you can be standing at the edge of a glacial lake in the Wicklow Mountains or looking up at a 121-metre waterfall in the gardens of one of Ireland’s great country estates. This private 7-hour taxi tour makes a day of it - picking you up from your hotel or an agreed location in Dublin and taking you to three genuinely impressive spots: Glendalough Lake, Powerscourt Waterfall, and your choice of the Sugarloaf Mountain Walk or the coastal town of Bray.
Up to 6 passengers travel together. Your driver picks you up, handles the parking throughout the day, and drops you back to the same location. The one cost to budget for separately is the entrance fee at Powerscourt Waterfall, paid on arrival.
Glendalough is the highlight for most people - give it proper time. The monastic site has been drawing visitors for over a thousand years, and with good reason. The round tower, the ruined churches, and the two lakes set in a glacial valley all add up to something that takes time to absorb. If your group is walking-inclined, the upper lake path is quieter than the main site and worth the extra 20 minutes on your feet.
The Sugarloaf versus Bray decision is worth thinking about in advance. If you want a walk with views and don’t mind a bit of a climb, the Sugarloaf is a good choice - it’s a conical quartzite peak with a clear path to the top on a decent day. If you’d rather finish the day by the sea, Bray has a long Victorian promenade and a relaxed coastal town feel. Tell your driver which you’d prefer when you book, or at the start of the day.
Powerscourt Waterfall is paid on arrival. The entrance fee isn’t included in the tour price - budget for it separately. The waterfall itself, at 121 metres, is the highest in Ireland and sits within the grounds of Powerscourt Estate. It’s a short drive from the main estate gardens. The woodland walk around the base is easy and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Morning departures make the most of the light. The Wicklow Mountains catch the best light in the morning, and Glendalough in particular looks different in soft early light compared to midday. It also means you’re ahead of the coach groups, which tend to arrive around mid-morning. Talk to your driver about departure time when you book.
Bring a waterproof layer. County Wicklow sits in the mountains just south of Dublin and has its own microclimate. Even in summer, the upper areas can be cool and wet while Dublin is warm and dry. A light rain jacket that folds into a bag is all you need - it’s not extreme terrain, just genuinely changeable weather.
