At The Moat Theatre · The Moat Theatre, Naas, Co. Kildare
If you grew up with Hotel California on the radio or spent any teenage summer with Desperado on repeat, a night with Absolute Eagles at the Moat Theatre is a genuine treat. This is Europe’s premier Eagles tribute act - a five-piece with tight, layered vocals and guitar harmonies that sit very close to the recordings you know by heart. The crowd tends to be mixed: couples in their forties and fifties, older fans who caught the originals, and younger people who found the back catalogue through streaming. It’s the kind of show where people sing along from the opening bars and nobody minds.
Absolute Eagles play the full span of the Eagles catalogue, from Take It Easy and Peaceful Easy Feeling through to Hotel California and the later studio work. The band’s calling card is five-part vocal harmony - the thing that made the original group unusual among their peers - and they replicate it live rather than leaning on backing tracks. Expect the hits in full, played at close to full length, with the guitar solos intact. The show runs 140 minutes, which includes one interval, giving you time for a drink at the Moat’s bar. The theatre seats 200, with retractable seating and a good sightline from every position - there is no bad seat in the house. The intimacy of the room suits this kind of show well; it is nothing like a stadium gig, and is better for it.
Naas is the county town of Kildare and sits right on the M7 motorway, about 30 kilometres south-west of Dublin city centre. By car from Dublin it is roughly 35 minutes in ordinary traffic. From Limerick or Cork the M7 brings you in from the opposite direction. Street parking is available in Naas town centre in the evening, and there are pay car parks nearby. By public transport, Bus Eireann and Dublin Coach both run services between Dublin and Naas; check real-time departure boards before you travel. The theatre is a short walk from the bus stops on the main street.
Naas has a good handful of pubs and restaurants worth arriving early for, and the town centre is compact enough to walk. There is more to see in Naas and across Co. Kildare.
